Assistive Reading Technology
Assistive reading technology offers alternative ways to access written information — recognizing text, enlarging it, converting it to speech, or navigating it.
The Main Technologies
OCR, or Optical Character Recognition, converts text in an image or scan into machine-readable text. Text-to-speech converts digital text into spoken audio. Magnification makes text and other visual information larger. Reading pens combine scanning and text-processing features in a portable device. Mobile OCR uses a smartphone camera to recognize printed information.
Why Portability Matters
A desktop accessibility setup can be powerful, but it isn't always practical when reading a menu, label, form, or printed page away from a desk. Portable reading technology brings assistance directly to the text.
Important: Information in this guide is provided for general purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical, vision, or accessibility advice. A reading pen is an assistive tool that provides access to printed text — it does not diagnose, treat, or correct any reading, vision, or attention-related condition. Last reviewed: August 2026.
