How to Choose a Reading Assistant

The best reading assistant depends on what you actually need to read.

Start With These Questions

Do you mainly read printed text? If yes, consider OCR-based portable tools. Do you want text read aloud? Look for text-to-speech. Do you need something portable? A dedicated handheld device may make more sense than a computer. Do you already use a smartphone? An OCR app may be enough for occasional use. Do you need help with longer documents? A tablet or computer may provide a better workspace.

Reading Pen vs. Phone

Choose a phone when you want maximum flexibility. Choose a dedicated reading pen when you want a focused device for scanning printed text.

The Right Tool Is the One That Fits Your Workflow

Reading assistance isn't one-size-fits-all. The goal is to choose technology that fits the material you read, the places you read it, and the way you prefer to access information.

A reading pen is an assistive tool that provides access to printed text — it does not diagnose, treat, or correct any reading, vision, or attention-related condition. Last reviewed: August 2026.
