Printed Text to Speech
Text-to-speech is usually associated with digital documents, but printed text can also be converted into spoken audio. The key technology is OCR.
How It Works
First, a camera or scanner captures the printed words. Then OCR recognizes the text, converting the image into machine-readable text. Finally, text-to-speech reads it aloud, converting the recognized text into spoken audio.
Ways to Convert Printed Text to Speech
Smartphone OCR apps, desktop scanners, computer OCR software, tablets, and dedicated reading pens.
Why Use a Dedicated Reading Device?
For occasional use, a phone may be enough. For frequent scanning of individual words or lines, a dedicated reading pen can provide a faster and more focused workflow.
